Research Associate / Senior Research Associate, In Vivo Pharmacology

Position Summary:
Achaogen is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company passionately committed to the discovery, development, and commercialization of innovative antibacterials to treat multi-drug resistant, Gram-negative infections. In light of recent positive Phase 3 data for our NDA-candidate with breakthrough therapy designation, plazomicin, and a growing pipeline that includes small molecules in early development and multiple large and small molecule discovery programs, we are looking for an accomplished scientific minded researcher to join our growing in vivo pharmacology group.

We seek a highly motivated and driven Research Associate / Senior Research Associate who will have hands-on responsibilities for Achaogen’s in vivo studies. Responsibilities:

  • Dosing, necropsy, and in life procedures (IV, PO, SC, IP dosing, anesthesia, simple surgery, blood and tissue collection) for non-clinical studies
  • Maintaining accurate and well-organized records and worksheets
  • Planning, execution, documentation and analyses of experiments
  • Familiarity with IACUC protocols and regulations involved with in vivo work
  • In collaboration with scientist and project teams: contribute to the design, performance, data analysis,
  • interpretation and reporting of in vivo studies that may include: immunization, tolerability/toxicology,
  • DMPK and pharmacology/efficacy and biomarker discovery/validation studies
  • Ensuring appropriate EH&S compliance
  • Managing activities within an agreed scope and timeline
  • Supporting development, approval and archival of protocols, study reports and data presentations
  • Constantly seeking to improve on processes to increase efficiency of the in vivo pharmacology group
  • Performance of tasks essential to the job function may require the employee to work directly with, handle, or otherwise come into contact with laboratory animals, chemicals or pharmaceutical agents
  • For Senior Research Associates:
    • In collaboration with scientists and pharmacologists, planning and performing Pharmacokinetic (PK)/Pharmacodynamic (PD) studies
    • Acts independently to determine appropriate methods and starts to develop new procedures for assignments
    • Has ability to establish a new technique that has significant impact in research
    • Responsible for delegation of work and time, quality control and team development
    • Partner with scientists and research associates to understand their needs from the vivarium
    • Proactively identify and resolve vivarium problems by consulting with internal scientific staff and research management
    • Assist in developing and implementing new animal models

Essential Experience:

  • A minimum of 1-6 years of experience, depending on level, in conducting in vivo studies
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Impeccable organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Experience in the conduct in vivo experiments, including delivery of candidate drug regimens, making in-life observations, aseptic technique and harvesting and processing samples for the evaluation of drug levels,
  • histology, and molecular endpoints
  • Strong communications skills: ability to clearly present study objectives, data and conclusions to a research
  • team and to integrate seamlessly into project team work flows
  • Hands-on experience with compound dosing, blood collection, necropsy and anesthesia for relevant non-clinical species
  • Thorough understanding and comprehension of techniques, nomenclature, equipment, etc. as they relate specifically to job performance function in the laboratory animal research environment
  • For Senior Research Associates:
    • Experience training research technicians
    • Exercises independent judgment and creativity in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results including maintenance, development and induction of disease models

Education:

  • BS/BA/MS/MA in a scientific discipline (AALAS, LAT/LATG certification is an acceptable alternative with appropriate experience)
