Scientist I/II – Antibody Drug Discovery

Position Summary:

We seek a highly motivated and diligent scientist to join the Therapeutic Antibodies group at Achaogen.  The successful candidate will have a background in biological sciences and a track record of productivity in a biotechnology or academic research environment, as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or advancement of therapeutic projects. This role will operate in a highly diverse and dynamic research environment and contribute to Achaogen’s innovative antibody drug discovery pipeline in disease areas with high unmet medical need.  The successful candidate will have the exemplary organizational and technical skills to lead multidisciplinary project teams focused on efficiently bringing new medicines directed against novel targets to patients.  Responsibilities will include the oversight of development of robust screening assays, triaging of antibody panels to identify optimal clinical development candidates, and biological validation of targets.  The ability to coordinate the activities of multiple functional area representatives, to problem solve and to deploy resources to answer key scientific questions are critical to the role.  Attention to detail, the ability to communicate across multiple scientific disciplines and a persistent drive for results will be essential attributes of the successful candidate.

Essential Functions:

  • Develops project strategies and identifies approaches with highest chances of success.
  • Works seamlessly with external biotech collaborators and/or internal antibody discovery platform team.
  • Motivates and manages a diverse scientific team towards a common goal; drives project teams towards decisions based on data & probability of success.
  • Be the in-house expert on specific targets and disease area biology.
  • Identifies and leverages external academic collaborators & consultants to facilitate informed decisions and to fill company or project team knowledge gaps.
  • Identifies current and future critical path activities for projects and resource appropriately; assesses and mitigates key risks.
  • Possesses the desire to work in the lab to enable project success.

Essential Experience:

  • 4+ years of experience in an academic or industrial laboratory.
  • Hands-on experience pertaining to antibody discovery and/or characterization.
  • Demonstration of prior success through publication in top peer-reviewed journals.
  • Oral & poster presentations at scientific research conferences.

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior experience working on therapeutic discovery teams.
  • Direct management of individuals and/or teams.


  • Ph.D. degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g. pharmacology, cell biology, biochemistry) is required.


  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organization skills.
