Nearly all antibiotic drugs are derived from natural products and the rational design of semi-synthetic derivatives has enabled development of next-generation therapeutics that circumvent entrenched and emerging mechanisms of drug resistance. However, the synthetic challenges presented by these molecules limit our ability to identify, characterize, and optimize new candidates. To address this, we aim to broadly expand our ability to explore antibiotic chemical space by harnessing the DNA-encoded chemistries of biosynthetic enzymes.
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our Early Research Department and engage in novel research regarding the biosynthesis of natural product antibiotics. The proposed research project will involve the elucidation of novel antibiotic biosynthesis mechanisms and the development of innovative chemical, systems, and/or synthetic biology tools that enable heterologous expression of these pathways.
The Achaogen postdoctoral program is an immersive three-year opportunity designed to enable highly independent and motivated scientists to perform impactful basic or translational research in a biotech-industry setting. Fellows will be paired with an internal scientific mentor and integrate into in a highly interdisciplinary environment, surrounded by high-caliber researchers with diverse scientific backgrounds. We strive to empower Achaogen postdocs to make influential discoveries that result in high-impact publications and contribute to the overall goal of developing new medicines to treat drug-resistant bacterial infections.
